There are a lot of life lessons i chapter 1-5. One is to take what you can get, McCandles might not have wanted to eat berries all the time but, but if thats what he could get, then he took it. Another life lesson is to follow your dream, if McCandles just stayed at home and didnt go on his "adventure" he wouldnt have really made anything of himself, he would just be another person that builds up society.
